Keeping Your Garbage Disposal Flowing

garbage disposal repairYour loyal garbage disposal keeps working diligently, but one day a flip of the switch doesn’t generate any power. Although this strong appliance grinds and cuts up food every day for years, it still requires care between those meals. You could call a reputable Milwaukee garbage disposal repair technician, but also try a few of these care tips to really keep your blades chopping effectively.

Offer it Lemon Power

About once a month, slice a few thin sections of lemon to place down the disposal. Lemons’ acidity will cut through food particles, grease and other substances in the assembly itself. Allow some warm water to flow into the drain as the lemons are placed inside. Keep your fingers away from the blades as you activate the disposal at the switch. Thin slices should easily break apart and clean your disposal perfectly.

Vinegar is Your Hero

You might have heard about placing ice cubes in your disposal to clean it, but go a step further and use vinegar. Using your handy ice cube tray, pour half vinegar and half water into each section. Freeze them and add the cubes to the drain once a month. Vinegar is a powerful cleaning agent without harmful chemicals involved. The ice shards also scrape against the disposal blades to clean them along with the vinegar too.

Cold Water, Please

Try to avoid using hot water down the disposal drain if you’re whisking fats and grease away. As hot water melts the fats, they end up congealing inside the drain and create clogs. Using cold water allows the fats to remain in pieces, so they can be moved along with the water and particles to local sewers.

Add a Strainer

To help your disposal’s lifespan, add a removable strainer to the drain top. They come in attractive styles and capture all medium to large items flowing to the drain. Simply empty the strainer as you go about your cooking processes. You’ll find that the disposal lasts longer with less clogs over time because the strainer catches the majority of foods.

If you don’t feel comfortable with your disposal’s operation, don’t hesitate to contact a Milwaukee garbage disposal repair professional. These experts will take a detailed look at the appliance to make it work as if it is brand new. Protect your plumbing with a strong garbage disposal that forces food particles downward with each flow of the faucet.
