Natural Cleaning Products to Clean Your Appliances

baking soda can keep your appliances cleanWould you like to reduce the number of harsh chemicals you use in your home? Doing so is inexpensive and simple. Consider these appliance cleaning tips that use safe, natural ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Clean Just About Anything

For a safe and effective all-purpose household cleaner, combine the following ingredients in a spray bottle:

1 cup white vinegar
1 cup rubbing alcohol
1 cup water
3-5 drops of liquid dish soap
Optional: 3-5 drops of lemon essential oil

This cleaner is antimicrobial and powers through grease. It is safe for use on most appliances, including those with surfaces made of metal, glass, plastic and enamel. This cleaner is not recommended for use on wood or marble, so be careful of over-spray.

For cleaning inside refrigerators and freezers, make this cleaning solution using hot water. Regular cleaning can reduce the need for costly refrigerator repairs.

Eliminated Baked-On Oven Stains

Tough messes inside your oven can be a pain, and conventional cleaners contain strong fumes. Instead, sprinkle baking soda on oven stains then spray with the vinegar cleaner described above. Let sit until the baking soda ceases foaming. Scrub lightly with steel wool, and your oven will be sparkling clean again.

Cut Through Hard Water Mineral Buildup

Mineral deposits may form on any appliance that uses water. These typically white, crusty deposits are difficult to remove. Power through mineral deposits with minimal effort using white or apple cider vinegar. Use vinegar at full strength, spraying or pouring on the affected area. If the appliance has removable parts, submerge these in a bowl of vinegar. Let sit ten minutes. Gently scrub with a stiff scouring pad, and the mineral deposits should be easily removed. Rinse with water to remove debris.

Deodorize Your Dishwasher or Washing Machine

Dishwashers and washing machines are staples of modern life, but if left unused for a time, they may develop an unpleasant, stale odor. Eliminate smells and boost cleaning power by using baking soda and vinegar.

For dishwashers, fill the detergent cup with baking soda, then run the dish washing cycle. To clean your washing machine, add one cup of white or apple cider vinegar and one half cup of baking soda to the drum, with the water level on the highest setting, and the temperature to hot. Hint: you can add these ingredients to a load of clothing to whiten whites, remove stains, and reduce odors as well.

Natural products can provide powerful cleaning and antimicrobial solutions that reduce effort and expense, and keep your family safe. Sometimes, however, your appliance may need more than just a good cleaning.
